Destiny 2: Lightfall Will Require Xbox Players To Remove Six Expansions
TheGamer 2hrs ago

In just a few short hours, Lightfall will arrive for Destiny 2, but the hotly anticipated expansion isn’t coming smoothly. PlayStation 5 players discovered they were unable to play the game at all if they preloaded the expansion on Sunday, forcing them to either not play Destiny until Lightfall’s arrival or otherwise re-installing the game without preloading. Today, we’re finding out Guardians on Xbox Series X|S will have some additional hoops to jump through in order to experience Neomuna on schedule.

"We are investigating an issue blocking sign-in for some Xbox Series X|S players," wrote Bungie earlier this morning. "These players will not be able to log in to Destiny 2 when the game comes back online on February 28, 2023 at 9 AM PT (-8 UTC) unless the following steps are completed."

Those steps involve going into your Destiny 2 directory and manually deleting several older expansions that have since been vaulted. You can do that by following the steps below:

  • Quit Destiny 2 if it is running
  • Highlight Destiny 2 tile
  • Press Menu button
  • Select "Manage game and add-ons"
  • Select Destiny 2
  • Unselect all of the following add-ons:
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken - Black Armory
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken - Joker's Wild
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken - Penumbra
    • Destiny 2: Forsaken Annual Pass
    • Expansion I: Curse of Osiris
    • Expansion II: Warmind
  • Select "Save Changes"
  • The add-ons will uninstall on the "Manage Queue" screen
  • Launch Destiny 2 when completed

We have no details on when or even if Bungie will fix Destiny 2 so that Xbox players won't have to perform these steps. This warning is likely a stop-gap measure so Xbox Series X|S players can still play Lightfall today with the rest of us.

It's curious that these expansions are even listed on the next-gen console at all as they were all vaulted over a year ago. There's no way to access Forsaken, Curse of Osiris, or Warmind, with many of those destinations swallowed by the dark. That would explain why Destiny 2 wouldn't launch, but it doesn't explain why they're still present in the Xbox menus.

More Destiny 2 content is set to be vaulted when Lightfall arrives later today, which you can read about in our previous coverage here. Destiny 2's servers should be back up at 9 AM PT (12 PM ET) provided there aren't any delays.
